Jack O'Connor to return to the Kerry senior manager's job

Jack O'Connor is to be put forward as the next Kerry senior football manager.

Already a three-time All Ireland winning manager with the Kingdom, he's been chosen by the Management Committee of Kerry GAA to succeed Peter Keane.

O'Connor has beaten off competition from Keane and Stephen Stack to resume a role he left in 2012.

His selectors will be Micheál Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy.

O'Connor stepped down as Kildare manager earlier this month, after two years at the helm. He'd been criticised for his comments regarding the Kerry job while still in charge of the Lilywhites.

During an Irish Examiner podcast, O'Connor told Paul Rouse, "Of course, there is an allure there" regarding the Kingdom gig.

He added, "Who doesn’t want to coach Man United? There is that allure because of the tradition."

There is speculation that former Down boss Paddy Tally will join O'Connor's ticket at a later stage. Colm Cooper's name has also been mooted.

Keane had been regarded as the favourite to retain a position he's held for the past three seasons. Under his stewardship, Kerry won two out of three Munster titles. However, they only reached one All Ireland final during that time.

Killarney Legion manager Stack had assembled an all-star cast for his proposed management team, with 1975 All Ireland-winner Mickey-Ned O'Sullivan and Donie Buckley his proposed assistants.

Seamus Moynihan was lined up as Stack's defence coach, with Dara Ó Cinnéide his forwards coach. Another former Kingdom star in Aidan O'Mahony was to be part of his strength and conditioning team.

O'Connor won two All Ireland titles (2004 & 2006) during his first spell in charge of Kerry. And after he filled the vacancy left by Pat O'Shea's resignation in 2009, he led Kerry to their 36th Sam Maguire later that year.

After leaving in 2012, he took charge of the Kerry minors a year later and led them to back-to-back All Ireland titles in 2014 and 2015.

O'Connor's selection will be ratified by the Kerry County Board on Monday, October 4.
