Former All Ireland Minor winner with Kerry, Stefan Okunbor has left AFL side Geelong Cats following three years as a rookie in Australia.

The 23-year-old - who made the move to Aussie Ruled in 2018 - suffered a serious Achillies injury and made a total of 17 appearances in the VFL, which was severely disrupted during the pandemic.

"Stefan showed great desire and commitment to become a better player," said Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd.

"He was limited by injury and the lack of games through the shutdown.

"He is now back in Ireland and we hope he can enjoy a successful Gaelic football career.

"Everyone at the club wishes Stefan well in their future endeavours."

Okunbor was part of the Kingdom's All-Ireland minor winning side in 2016 and then went on to play for the Kerry under 20s, who were managed by Jack O'Connor.

He played fullback on the Kerry team that reached the U20 All-Ireland semi-final in 2018 and won the Munster U20 Player of the Year award.

The news will be seen as a nice boost for O'Connor, who will be back for a third stint in charge of the Kerry senior team next season.
