Liverpool will be without Curtis Jones for their opening game of the new Premier League season this weekend.

The midfielder will miss the Saturday evening game after suffering a concussion in a pre-season friendly.

The 20-year-old Liverpool native was taken off in the first half of their friendly on Monday against CA Osasuna, following a collision.

Manager Jürgen Klopp has said he is feeling well but cannot resume training until after the trip to Carrow Road, in line with concussion protocols.

“He had a slight concussion so we just have to follow the protocol,” the German manager told Liverpoolfc.com on Wednesday.

“He is fine, he feels fine again, but that’s the protocol. He is available for training from Sunday on I think.”

Although not exactly a major concern the news won't be welcomed by Liverpool fans who will be hoping to put an exceptionally unlucky season, injury-wise, behind them.

In October of last year key defender Virgil Van Dijk picked sustained a serious injury against Everton, which resulted in him requiring surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, and not playing for the rest of the season.

Liverpool then had 20 different centre-back partnerships throughout the season as a number of players sustained injuries.

The news of Jones' omission at the weekend comes just days after Andy Robertson was also ruled out of the fixture with ankle ligament damage he picked up in pre-season.

Although he has said it is "nothing too major" the Scotland international did have to be helped off the pitch in their friendly with Athletic Bilbao.

Posting on Twitter he said;

"Scan suggests nothing too major but there's some ligament damage which will need to mend.

"I will be grafting every day so I can help the team again sooner rather than later."

His injury makes it increasingly likely Kostas Tsimikas, who managed just six Premier League minutes in his maiden campaign for the Reds last season, will make his first league start at Carrow Road.
