Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says he is hopeful the Ligue 1 season can still be finished despite being cancelled last week.

The French professional league (LFP) ended its season last week with 10 games left, awarding the title to PSG.

Lyon were seventh in the table, one point behind Nice and Reims, in fifth and sixth respectively, with 10 games still to play.

As things stand Lyon are facing the prospect of no European football for the first time since 1997 unless they defy the odds to win this season's Champions League, which UEFA plan to play in August.

There is still a possibility of playing in next season's Europa League with a win over PSG in the French League Cup final but it has been postponed indefinitely.

The German Bundesliga is set to become the first major European league to resume later this month and Aulas believes that news should give hope that the French season can be completed.

Aulas told L'Equipe: "We are on the wrong path, it may not be too late to try to imagine, in the light of what is happening everywhere in Europe, something that is politically coherent: we had until late August and maybe even early September to finish."

England, Spain and Italy are also pressing ahead with plans to resume their seasons.

Aulas added: "I noted almost 10 European countries where training has started again. So, we can really wonder. By adapting our methods, we could probably have finished the Championship.

"As long as there is life, there is hope. For all the people who are reasonable and who had the main argument, to tell us to stop, that all the other championships were going to stop, a very important milestone has been reached today."

Aulas also said this week that his club had suffered a 'loss of opportunity' and warned he would claim 'millions of euros in damages' from unspecified bodies.
