Rory McIlroy stands to lose more than his Open Championship title if he can't play at St. Andrews.

The 26 year old is unlikely to defend his crown next week after damaging ligaments in his left ankle playing football with friends last Saturday.

McIlroy has already withdrawn from this weeks Scottish Open and it could be the end of the week before we find out if he will compete in the third major of the year.

If McIlroy can't play at St. Andrews he would be the first reigning champion not to defend his title since Ben Hogan in 1954.

It would also deny us the chance of seeing McIlroy go up against Jordan Spieth who has won the first two majors of the year.

A third major for Spieth could see him replace McIlroy as world number one but the American would also need a good finish (top seven) at the John Deere Classic this week.

Rory is not the first golfer to suffer an injury from something other than golf. Paul Casey was ruled out of action for two months after a snowboarding crash while Miguel Angel Jimenez broke his leg in a skiing accident in 2013, and was out for six months.

A surfing accident forced Adam Scott to pull out of the 2008 Australian PGA and remember France's Thomas Levet got a bit excited after winning the French Open.
