Munster's Jean Kleyn handed two-week suspension

Munster lock Jean Kleyn has received a two-week ban for "dangerous play" in his team's defeat to Leinster in the PRO14 last weekend.

The Ireland international was cited after the game for an incident of "dangerous play in a ruck or maul. A player must not make contact with an opponent above the line of the shoulders."

Judicial Officer, Simon Thomas ruled that it was "found to merit a mid-range entry point, which indicates a four-week suspension for this offence." But Kleyn's acceptance of the foul and his previous good behaviour saw the suspension cut back to two weeks.

It means the South Africa-native will sit out Munster's trip to Benetton in the PRO14 this weekend but he'll be back in time for their next match against Edinburgh next month.

PRO14 statement:

"Jean Kleyn of Munster Rugby was cited following their Guinness PRO14 Round 9 fixture with Leinster Rugby on Saturday, January 23 under Law 9.20 (b) – Dangerous play in a ruck or maul. A player must not make contact with an opponent above the line of the shoulders.

"The Citing was presided over by Judicial Officer, Simon Thomas (WRU), who concluded that an act of foul play had occurred. The incident was found to merit a mid-range entry point, which indicates a four-week suspension for this offence.

"The Judicial Officer determined that there were mitigating factors, including the player’s acceptance of the foul play, timely remorse and previous clean disciplinary record, which under the disciplinary rules warranted a reduction in the sanction of two weeks. The Player is free to play from Monday February 15, 2021."
