New Longford manager Billy O'Loughlin to bring fresh dynamic

Billy O'Loughlin has been appointed the new Longford senior football manager.

He replaces Padraig Davis, who stepped down in July after three years at the helm. His final game was the 4-22 to 0-12 defeat to Meath in the quarter-finals of the Leinster Championship.

O'Loughlin's appointment means inter-county football's final managerial vacancy has been filled.

He'll be assisted by Cavan men, Michael Hannon and Paul Brady. Tyrone's Daniel O'Doherty joins as strength and conditioning coach, with Mayo's Aidan Kilcoyne looking after the goalkeepers.

O'Loughlin led his native Laois to the final of the 2019 Leinster U20 Championship, where they were beaten by eventual All Ireland finalists, Dublin.

Longford chairperson Albert Cooney explained the near five-month wait to appoint Davis' successor, saying "it was worth the wait" to get the right team for the team, adding that he was delighted with the calibre of O'Loughlin's backroom team.

He takes over a team who survived a playoff to retain their place in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League this year.

O'Loughlin said he "intends to bring a fresh and dynamic approach to the inter-county set-up", and is looking forward to building on the existing talent, and working with emerging new prospects within the county."
