There was barely time for the dust to settle in the Kingdom following Colm Coopers inter county retirement.

There's no hanging around in a county that regards any season without silverware as a season too long. Add to that the fact that Dublin are on an unbeaten run of 36 matches and you can imagine that the Kerry crowd must be green (and gold) with envy.

However there is no doubt that grudge levels have been taken to the max in the past 24 hours.

Former Dublin star Paul Curran was quoted as saying last week that Kerry should be “ashamed” of their style of play, while Dublin defender Philly McMahon called attention to Kerry’s physicality in the sides’ recent league clash.

Some of the factors that have prompted Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice to go on the offensive ahead of the counties’ rematch in the Allianz League final on Sunday.

“I had a good think about this and normally I don’t react to this stuff. Normally I kick for touch with these kinds of things because I don’t know whatever you want to call those things — mind games, I don’t believe in it. I believe there is a game of football to be played and you trust the referee to get it right.''

Fair enough but then he got into it at last night's press briefing with remarks that are sure to heighten tensions ahead of the repeat of the 2016 League decider at GAA HQ. Some battle ahead.
