Niall Carew and Ger Brennan to lead Carlow footballers

Niall Carew has been appointed as the new manager of the Carlow footballers.

He succeeds Turlough O'Brien, who surprisingly stepped down after six years at the helm in June.

Carew has been handed a two-year term as manager, but the Carlow county board have also appointed former Dublin footballer Ger Brennan as head coach.

Brennan is currently the manager of the Bray footballers in Wicklow, and the three-time All Ireland-winner is also GAA Development Executive at UCD.

They've previously worked together at Maynooth, and collectively, they've been given a two-year term.

The full backroom team is yet to be revealed, but it's believed to include Darren Leonard and Simon Rea as selectors.

Kildare native Carew is a former manager of both the Waterford and Sligo footballers.

He beats competition from O'Brien's former coach Steven Poacher for the role, while Pat Critchley and Joe Murphy were among the others in contention.

Carew and Poacher take the reins of a county who enjoyed a relative period of success under O'Brien.

He led them to Division Three of the Allianz Football League, and to a 2018 Leinster Football quarter-final win over Kildare.
