Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill says Seamus Coleman's surgery on his broken leg was successful, but he's stopped short of putting a timescale on his captain's recovery.

Coleman underwent surgery on a fractured tibia and fibula at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin yesterday, with O'Neill reporting that doctors are "very, very pleased" with the results.

O'Neill was speaking on BBC Five Live's Sportsweek this morning, and says Coleman won't be rushed back into action.

"It will take some time to heal. It was a double break. But it has been pinned up now and screwed in, and I know that the doctors and surgeons are all very, very pleased with the way the operation has gone.

"Now it’s time for recuperation. It will obviously take some time but Seamus has got great determination and sometimes these things work very much in your favour, in terms of recovery."

"Even the doctors and surgeons wouldn’t be terribly sure (on a timescale). Sometimes there are complications afterwards and injuries can be more prolonged, other times it can be clean and clear sailing"

Birmingham City have revealed that their midfielder Stephen Gleeson has been added to Martin O'Neill's squad for Tuesday's friendly international with Iceland at the Aviva Stadium, and will join up with the group today.

Gleeson won the last of his two international caps in 2007 under manager Steve Staunton, but the Dubliner has enjoyed a career renaissance since joining Birmingham in 2014.
