The dust has settled on the Republic of Ireland's crucial 1-0 win over Georgia at the Aviva Stadium. It wasn't a good performance last night but the result is all that mattered for Martin O'Neill's men.

The Ireland manager took off captain Robbie Keane and replaced him with Shane Long. The Southampton striker certainly isn't as potent in front of goal but his energy levels allowed the Boys in Green to inject some pace into attack.

Jeff Hendrick didn't have the best night until he came alive in the 69th minute with some beautiful footwork to set up Jonathan Walters for the all important winner.

What does it all mean?

Ireland head into the final two qualifiers with a four point advantage over Scotland who lost to Georgia and Germany while we were beating Gibraltar and Georgia.

It looks good but we need to remember that we have World Champions Germany to come at the Aviva on the 8th of October and three days later we go to Poland.

Even the most optimistic Irish fan would find it hard to see us winning either of those games but the game in Warsaw should be a little easier.

The key game left in the group is the meeting of Scotland and Poland at Hampden Park on the 8th, the same night we play Germany.

If Poland win Ireland are guaranteed a playoff and third place in Group D but if Scotland win they could find themselves just one point behind Ireland should we lose to Germany.

A draw in Glasgow on the 8th would mean Ireland need to pick up a point against Germany or Poland.

Scotland finish with a game against Gibraltar so I think it's a given they are guaranteed three points there and if Gordon Strachan's side finish level on points with Ireland the Scots get third spot because of their better head to head record.

Even though I was at the Aviva last night I found myself keeping a close eye on the game in Glasgow and I know it will be more of the same of the 8th of October.

There's bound to be another few twists yet so don't start dreaming about a trip to France just yet.
