Irish fans won't be in a rush to book flights to France for Euro 2016 after the Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Scotland at the Aviva Stadium.

It was looking good at half time when Ireland led 1-0 through a Jon Walters goal in the 38th minute which had more than a hint of offside.

The news from Poland was also positive at the break with the hosts being held by Georgia but two minutes into the second half Scotland were level.

Shaun Maloney's deflected shot went in off John O'Shea and the Scots were back in the driving seat. Martin O'Neill threw on James McClean, Robbie Keane and Shane Long but there was no sign of a winner.

The Ireland boss surprised a few with his selection of Daryl Murphy up front but the Ipswich striker did have a major hand in Walter's goal.

The result leaves Ireland on 9 points with Scotland second on 11 points. Poland have extended their lead at the top of Group D with a 4-0 win at home to Goergia. It was 0-0 at half time but Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in the last four minutes.

Germany will go back to second unless Gibraltar pull off one of the biggest shocks of all time.

If teams finish level on points, the team with the better head to head record goes through so that means Ireland are effectively three points behind Scotland with four games to play.

The Boys in Green have Gibraltar (A), Georgia (H), Germany (H) and Poland (A) left so the odds are stacked against them considering Scotland also have to play the same four teams and Gordon Strachan's side have Germany and Poland at home.

Martin O'Neill hasn't given up hope of qualifying but he knows today's result doesn't help:
