Patrick Bamford hopeful of England call up next month

Patrick Bamford is hoping he's done enough to impress England manager Gareth Southgate after his 12th Premier League goal of the season helped Leeds beat Crystal Palace 2-0 last night.

It was the former Ireland underage striker's 100th career goal and only Harry Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have scored more goals among English strikers in this year's Premier League.

“There are four or five strikers who haven’t been involved with England before a lot of times who are doing really well," the 27-year-old said when asked if he feels he's in contention for a place in England's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

"It’s going to be interesting to see who gets called up.  If I do or I don’t, I know I’ve done my best. Whoever does get called up fully deserves it, whether it’s me or any of the others.”

Last night's victory saw Leeds move into the top-half of the league and Bamford says they're aiming for consistent performances between now and the end of the campaign.

“I know it sounds really cliché and every team coming up says you just want to stay in the league, but after being out of the league for 16 years, it’s important for a big club like Leeds to just get a footing in the league and build from that.

“I think we’ve outdone ourselves to be honest, and we’ve taken a lot of teams by surprise. But it’s no more than we deserve, in some patches of the season we’ve been brilliant.

“Sometimes we’ve let ourselves down as well. It’s that consistency, but it definitely bodes well for the future.”
