Real Madrid have confirmed that striker Mariano Diaz has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now self-isolating at home.

The 26-year-old will be forced to quarantine for 14 days, which would rule him out of the second leg of Real's Champions League last 16 tie against Manchester City.

Real suggested Diaz displayed no symptoms of coronavirus but he will still have to follow coronavirus protocols and therefore did not train with his team-mates on Tuesday.

Real announced the news via the club’s website: "After the Covid-19 tests carried out individually on our first football team yesterday by the Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Mariano has given a positive result.

"The player is in perfect health and complying with the sanitary isolation protocol at home."

Diaz is yet to feature for Real in this season's Champions League but the Spanish champions will be hoping nobody else in the squad has contracted the virus.

The players were given some time off after clinching the La Liga title and are set to face City at the Etihad Stadium on August 7th.

Zinedine Zidane’s side trail City 2-1 from the first leg in Madrid in late February and had pushed for the second leg to be played in Portugal - where the quarter-finals onwards will be staged.

The news also comes just days after the UK Government removed Spain from the list of safe countries to travel to, due to fears of a second wave of coronavirus in Spain.

Anyone travelling from Spain to the UK must self-isolate for 14 days but it was announced the Real squad and staff would be exempt from those measures.
