For quite a while, the metatarsal injury seemed like it was just something that happened to English players in the run up to major tournaments.

However, the Republic of Ireland are now finding out how fragile that little bone in your foot can be, after Shane Duffy was ruled out of the crucial World Cup qualifier against Wales on March 24th.

The Derry man suffered the injury in Brighton's 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and despite playing through the pain barrier in that game, he's now set to have surgery which will keep him out of action for around six weeks.

Having broken into the International side before Euro 2016, Duffy has become a regular fixture at the heart of the Republic of Ireland defence, starting in the World Cup qualifier wins against Moldova, Georgia and Austria.

It's likely to leave John O'Shea, Ciaran Clark and Richard Keogh fighting it out for the two places at the centre of defence, while Martin O'Neill also has to contend with the loss of Robbie Brady, who is suspended after picking up another yellow card in the win against Austria.

It's also a big blow for promotion-chasing Brighton and their manager Chris Hughton, for whom Duffy has played a huge role since joining from Blackburn at the start of the season.
