Shane O'Neill appointed the new Galway senior hurling manager

Galway have appointed Shane O'Neill as their new senior hurling manager.

The appointment of the ex-Na Piarsaigh manager ends a three-month wait to appoint Mícheál Donoghue's successor.

O'Neill's been handed a two-year term with the Tribesmen.

Donoghue surprisingly stepped down in August following a disappointing Leinster Championship round robin that saw them finish 4th and have their season ended by mid-June.

Galway GAA say the long wait to find Donoghue's replacement was down to "having engaged in a robust and comprehensive recruitment process".

A brief statement says the composition of O'Neill's management team is still being finalised.

O'Neill had a very successful spell in charge of Limerick club Na Piarsaigh, leading them to All Ireland Club Final success in 2016. They also lost in the final to Cuala two-years later under O'Neill.

He also guided them to 3 Limerick titles and 2 Munster titles during his five-years in charge.

O'Neill's been installed as Galway manager less than 48-hours before the club final meeting of Liam Mellows and St. Thomas which he is expected to attend.

Galway are the last of the ten counties battling for the Liam McCarthy trophy in 2020 to appoint a manager.
