Southgate expects Kane and Rashford to be fit for Euro 2020

England manager Gareth Southgate is hopeful that both Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford will win their races to be fit for the Euro 2020 finals.

Kane has returned to light training after tearing his hamstring on New Year's Day and is expected to return before the end of the season while Rashford is sidelined with a double stress fracture in his back.

"We've had really good updates right the way through and Harry and Marcus are exactly where we were expecting them to be," the England boss revealed to Sky Sports News after the Nations League draw.

"Both players will give themselves the best possible chance of being available, that's their mentality and that's their dedication to their sport.

"That's the only bit we can guarantee, what we can't guarantee is how that rehab will develop as it's stepped up and as it becomes more intense, but they are both on track from the information we were given at the very start."

Southgate also defended his goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who is experiencing a dip in form at his club Everton:

"I think the reality is, as a goalkeeper mistakes will happen and people will shine a light on them. That is the reality of the position.

"He's been a key part of our success over three years. It's good he has competition to achieve a high level.

"He manages to brush those things off, it's key for any player, the ability to brush things off kind of determines your career.

"Obviously we gave Nick Pope a game in November, it's an area where more experienced back-ups have injuries or dropped out of the frame."
