Spanish footballers association call for all games to be postponed

The Spanish footballers association - the AFE - have called for games at all levels in the country to be postponed due to coronavirus fears.

The AFE have sent letters to Spain's Higher Sports Council, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga requesting they shut down football in the country.

Their statement says they've made the call "thinking exclusively about the health of the players", the group they represent.

Games in La Liga are due to be played behind closed doors until March 22. Tuesday night's Champions League last-16 meeting of Valencia and Atalanta is to be played at an empty Mestalla.

It was also confirmed on Tuesday that Wednesday-week's Champions League clash of Barcelona and Napoli will be played in a closed Camp Nou.

However, the AFE say continuing to play games behind closed doors "undermines the meaning of sports competitions".

The footballers union aren't alone in making the call for football in Spain to be postponed en masse, with Real Zaragoza and Celta Vigo also behind the cause.

Celta claim that "football without fans is meaningless and playing behind closed doors is totally inappropriate", while Zaragoza's statement says, "The protocol proposed by the Higher Sports Council and communicated by La Liga to Real Zaragoza does not resolve the fundamental issue of the guarantee of the defense of the protagonists' health."

They want the 28th and 29th rounds of matches to be deferred.

The RFEF have also spread their behind closed doors directive to include youth and futsal games across the country.

35 people have lost their life to coronavirus in Spain with in excess of 1,600 cases reported.
