Spurs knocked back again as Sevilla reject Lopetegui approach

Tottenham's protracted search for a new manager has taken another twist with Sevilla rejecting a "dizzying" approach for Julen Lopetegui.

Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho in April, leaving Ryan Mason to steer the ship until the end of the season.

Since then, talks with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Genarro Gattuso have brought them no closer to appointing a successor.

Paris Saint-Germain were unwilling to let Pochettino out of his contract. Talks with Conte reportedly broke down over budgetary disagreements.

Fonseca was believed to be on the verge of becoming Spurs' new manager before tax concerns interceded. While discussions with Gattuso were brought to an abrupt end after a fan backlash.

According to Sevilla president Jose Castro, the North London club have now turned their attentions to Lopetegui.

The 54-year old led Sevilla to Europa League success during his first season in charge (2019-20). Last season they finished 4th in La Liga and were beaten in the Champions League last-16 by Borussia Dortmund.

Castro told Cadena SER in Spain, "Julen rang me and told me. He said he'd received offers he'd not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham.

"But he said he doesn't forget things and that he is very motivated here.

"We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I'm sure he will bring much more to the club.

"You see his ability and leadership every day. Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here."

Tottenham players not involved at Euro 2020 are due to report back for pre-season training on July 5.
