But victory against Crystal Palace sparked a run of just two defeats in 18 games to Christmas, and despite running out of form, they'd done enough to claim a fourth place finish, and secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane played an integral role that season, and returned to The Boot Room on Premier League Live with Sky Sports to tell us all about the club's best top flight season in decades.
