After Jack Charlton's incredible 10 year spell in charge of the Republic of Ireland came to an end in 1996, Mick McCarthy's arrival in the hotseat brought one era to an end, and gave birth to another.

One of the first new arrivals on the scene in 1996 was Shay Given. At the time, the Donegal man was on loan at Sunderland from Blackburn, and fresh-faced as a 19-year-old.

Mick McCarthy's first game was also Given's first, a 2-0 friendly defeat to Russia at Lansdowne Road.

The result was forgettable for Given, but the occasion was anything but.

"I remember speaking to me Dad the night before, and he said don't be looking up at the crowd, because I was still only young. You're 19, you only left school a couple of years before that, and the next year you're playing for Ireland.," Given says.

"You're looking to one side and Paul McGrath's getting changed next to you, and Roy Keane's at the other side. A couple of years previous to that I was getting their autographs.

"You have to enjoy the moment because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to make your debut, and I tried to do that as much as I could."

Given went on to win a whopping 134 caps for the Republic of Ireland, second only to Robbie Keane.
