Tiger Woods facing another spell out after further back surgery

Tiger Woods has undergone yet another surgery on his back.

The fifteen-time major winner will be out for the foreseeable future after having a disc fragment removed from his spine.

It's the fifth time Woods has required surgery on his troublesome back, and the first since he underwent a spinal fusion operation in 2017.

Three of those procedures were microdiscectomies like the one he's just undergone.

He's expected to miss at least the first two months of the PGA Tour season, and will be in a race against time to be fit for The Masters at Augusta in April.

Woods will definitely be absent from both the Farmers Insurance Open and the Genesis Invitational.

A brief statement read: "Tiger has recently undergone a microdiscectomy procedure to remove a pressurised disc fragment that was pinching his nerve after experiencing discomfort following the PNC Championship.

"His doctors and their team have determined it to be successful and expect him to make a full recovery.

""I look forward to begin training and am focused on getting back out on Tour," Tiger said.

"While Tiger will not be competing at Torrey Pines or Riviera, he is still looking forward to serving as Tournament Host of The Genesis Invitational."

Woods previous back issues forced him into playing just one PGA Tour event between August 2015 and December 2017.

He returned to action in late 2017 after the spinal fusion, and his recovery peaked with his victory at The Masters in 2019.

Since then he has struggled with form, pain and knee problems.
