Tommy Fleetwood feels the Ryder Cup should be postponed until 2021

One of the stars of Europe's 2018 Ryder Cup team, Tommy Fleetwood, has called on this year's tournament to be pushed back until 2021.

Padraig Harrington's side are set to defend their title against their American counterparts at Whistling Straits on the last weekend of September, and last week the Dubliner said the team event was due to go ahead as planned.

"I'd be more thinking, wouldn't we love some sport going on now. Most people are stuck at home and would love something to watch on the TV," Harrington told Off The Ball when asked if the Ryder Cup could proceed behind closed doors.

"I would go down the road - if it was possible from a health and safety point of view - wouldn't it be great to put something on the television that people could watch? Something to bring  a bit of something else into the day."

But with the first two majors of the campaign, the PGA Championship and The Masters already postponed, Fleetwood feels that team qualification has already been disrupted unfairly:

"It would be a shame and feel weird to have to wait for so long after the last Ryder Cup, but you just have to take whatever comes," he told The Times. "And it would be fairer in qualification terms for it to be pushed back.

Fleetwood is currently top of the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings and the Englishman says he's trying to stay sharp while the season is halted:

"It's not great in terms of practice and playing time, but it will be good for rest and recovery. Hopefully this will never happen again but we have to deal with it,"
