Waterford to play their under-19 side against Drogheda today

Waterford FC are set to field their under-19 team in today's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash with Drogheda.

Two players within the Blues' senior squad have been deemed close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The rest of their players have since tested negative but the club says they're not going to take any risks.

"Waterford FC wishes to advise that two of our senior players have been deemed to be close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case," a club statement read.

"As a result, we have carried out a wide testing programme of our first team. Thankfully, these tests have returned negative test results. However, in keeping with our ethos of public safety and that of our club and visitors, we have made the decision to stand down our senior team for the visit of Drogheda FC.

"Our talented Under-19 squad will take to the field in the RSC to fulfill the fixture under the guidance of manager Mike Geoghegan."

Waterford currently prop up the Premier Division table with just six points from their opening nine games. Manager Kevin Sheedy and his assistant Mike Newell both departed their roles at the RSC this week.
