Due for release this Friday, Neil young's 38th album Hitchhiker has resurfaced from 1976. The solo acoustic album was written only on nights with a full moon when Neil Young felt most creative.

He effortlessly churned out tracks with his old producing partner David Briggs in the Indigo Ranch Recording Studios in Malibu with the final recording happening all in one night.

It was originally intended to be released soon after it was finished, but the suits in Reprise Records didn't feel it was good enough, telling him they though it was too much like a demo.

Which meant the majority of the songs on Hitchhiker like Captain Kennedy and Pocahontas were modified and appeared on Neil Young's later work.

Making Hitchhiker a skeleton album for his future body of classics to come and to hear it retrospectively gives a new darker meaning to the older songs.

Amongst these raw recordings on the album, lies two unheard tracks Hawaii and Give Me Strength which are well worth discovering.

The Paul McLoone Show, Monday to Thursday from 9pm.
