A woman has died, and a man has been seriously injured, following a stabbing in Cork city.
The married couple were attacked outside a house in Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough, at around 9pm on Monday.
The man and woman were taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.
The 59-year-old woman later died in hospital. A 62-year-old man remains in a serious, but stable condition.
A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
He's being held at a garda station in Cork city, where he can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
In a statement, Gardaí said emergency services responded to a reported assault outside a residence in Shrewsbury Downs at approximately 9:15pm on Monday.
Two houses and a large green area in the estate were sealed off on Tuesday morning.
The scene was preserved for examination by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.
Investigating officers are appealing for witnesses, or anybody who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Monday night, to contact them.
Detectives are also appealing to anyone with video footage, including home security and dash-cam footage, to make it to gardaí.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, and an incident room has been set up at Anglesea Street Garda Station.
A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the married couple's family.
