An International Airport in Arklow: Would you use it?

There are plans to build an international airport in County Wicklow.

Yes, you read that right, an international airport in Arklow.

It's understood a Middle-Eastern consortium is looking to buy up to 800 acres of land near the town to build the project.

It's reported that several discussions between developers and local landowners have taken place.

If it became a reality, it would be called 'East Leinster International Airport'.

Shane Desmond from SWD Properties which is representing the consortium, says it makes "a lot of sense".

It's thought the distance from Dublin, the catchment area, the airspace, rail links and motorway links are all major factors in the decision to locate the project near Arklow.

However, Wicklow County Council says it has had no contact with anybody in relation to a proposed airport.

Locals have had mixed reactions to the plans, speaking to Today FM News, one person said "I was a little bit shocked... there would be noise pollution, fuel pollution, traffic pollution, so it wouldn't be something I'd like for our town".

"I hope it comes because I don't want to have to travel to Dublin to go to Spain anymore" another remarked.

The planners say the new airport would have a catchment area of some 1.9 million people.

The airport could directly create "up to 18,000 jobs" and over 140,000 indirectly, according to the plans.

It comes as Waterford Airport is planning a major runway expansion after securing private investment.
