The upcoming Barbie movie used so much pink paint that it contributed to a worldwide shortage.

The film's director Greta Gerwig told Architectural Digest the construction of Barbieland took so much paint that 'the world ran out of pink'.

The Barbie Dreamhouse inspired set was designed by Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer.

Gerwig told the magazine that 'everything needed to be pink'.

“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount. I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much.”

The film's paint supplier, Rosco, told the Los Angeles Times, Barbie's production coincided with global supply chain problems during Covid-19 and extreme weather in Texas in early 2021, which affected availability of vital materials used to create the paint.

The film, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken, is out in cinemas in July.
