Almost €108 million worth of cash and assets were seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau in the 11 years between 2011 and 2021.

It was recovered from criminals after orders by the High Court. CAB seizes property from criminals who acquired it through illegal means.

2019 was by far the biggest year for seizures when €53 million worth of cryptocurrency was frozen by CAB.

CAB was set up in 1996, less than four months after the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin in Dublin.

It involves four agencies - the Gardaí, Revenue Commissioners and the Departments of Justice and Social Protection.

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín obtained the figures from the Minister for Justice. He says, "these are startling figures, and show a significant amount of cash and assets, uh, that have been seized from criminals. It also shows €60 million was recovered by CAB in relation to revenue and social welfare payments for that time as well."
