Cannabis Is The Most Commonly Used Illicit Drug In Ireland

Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in Ireland, according to a major new report - followed by ecstasy and cocaine.

The European Drug Report for 2019 also found that 3 in 10 adults in Ireland have taken an illicit drug in their lifetime.

Drug use is most common among males and younger age group in Ireland and in Europe.

Around 96 million adults in the EU have tried an illicit drug in their lifetime, according to this year's report.

Over 1 million seizures of illicit drugs are reported annually, while in 2018, 55 new psychoactive substances were detected in the EU for the first time.

Cocaine seizures are at record levels in the EU, with over 104 thousand reported in 2017 amounting to over 140 tonnes of the drug.
