Health officials have announced a further 1,866 COVID cases this evening.

This morning, there were 331 coronavirus patients in Irish hospitals – up eight on yesterday and 36% on this day last week.

There were 61 in intensive care – up five on yesterday and 17% on last week.

In a series of tweets, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said the intensive care figure is the highest since April 3rd.

He noted that vaccination remains our best means of protection against the virus and said he strongly encouraged anyone who has yet to get vaccinated or was still waiting their second dose to take it up now.

“When incidence of disease is high, as it is in Ireland at the moment, it greatly increases the risk to you of contractingCOVID-19,” he said.

“If you complete your vaccine schedule you will be fully protected 7 – 14 days after your second dose.”

He said vaccination and adherence to public health advice will break the chains of transmission and drive down the incidence of the virus in our communities.

He urged anyone experiencing symptoms to isolate and get a test immediately.

“Continue to regularly wash hands, wear a mask when appropriate, keep your distance, open windows and ventilate indoor spaces and avoid crowds,” he said.

“Manage your social contacts and choose outdoors where possible for meeting others.”
