The deadline for taking down posters used in the general election is midnight tonight.

Candidates must remove all posters before tomorrow, including the cable-ties used to hang them.

The clean-up may be complicated by Storm Dennis which is bringing heavy rain and strong winds across the country this weekend.

However, offending candidates face fines of €150 under the Litter Pollution Act if they don't get their posters down in time.

The law requires that they must be down within seven days of polling day.

Otherwise, local authorities will issue fines to those found to have breached littering laws.

Therefore, people can report posters still remaining up from tomorrow to their local authority.

Last year, fines amounting to tens of thousands of euro were issued by local authorities to candidates who had left posters up beyond the deadline.
