The first death associated with coronavirus has been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.

The patient was an elderly woman from the east of the country.

She was being treated in hospital initially for respiratory problems when she was diagnosed with COVID 19.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said:

"I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of this patient.

"We continue our efforts to interrupt the transmission of this virus. It will take all of us, collectively to succeed. Please continue to follow public health advice."

Across the island of Ireland, there are now 52 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

It's after two new cases were confirmed in the North earlier.

Both of those who've tested positive are associated with a previously reported case.

The National Public Health Emergency Team will provide an update at its daily briefing later this evening.
