A former school principal has been jailed for three years for abusing seven of his pupils.

It happened over a two-year period starting in September of 1968.

Patrick Harte, of Glendown Park, Templeogue, Dublin, abused them at his desk while teaching at Sancta Maria Christian Brothers primary school on Synge Street in Dublin.

The boys were aged eight or nine when he abused them.

Fr. Tony Conlon said the abuse he suffered had a "paralyzing effect" on his life.

He has thanked gardaí for bringing his tormenter to justice:

"I would like to thank the Detective Unit in Kevin Street especially the detectives in charge of my case...who worked tirelessly to bring this investigation to its successful completion."

Fr. Conlon said he will be forever grateful to them.
