A government TD is calling for July 12th to be made a public holiday.

The Green Party's Patrick Costello says it's a culturally significant day for many on the island and should be recognised along with St. Patricks Day.

It is celebrated in parts of the North to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

In a statement, he said, "Today I am calling on the Irish Government to make the 12th of July a public holiday.

"This day is an extremely important one historically for the island, and culturally for many people who live here.”

“As part of the peace process we have made a number of gestures, such as amending articles 2 and 3 of the constitution.

"The new article 3 specifies that the state will work ‘to unite all the people who share the territory of the island of Ireland, in all the diversity of their identities and traditions’.

"I believe my proposal would see us living up to our constitutional obligation.”

It's as a picture of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was placed on a bonfire in Tyrone over the weekend.

The image set alight at commemorations in Moygashel.

The bonfire also featured a mock copy of the Good Friday Agreement with the words 'null and void' printed across it.

The incident is being investigated as a hate-related incident by the PSNI.
