The High Court has approved a settlement of €15 million for a 13-year-old boy who suffered brain damage at birth.

Arron O'Keefe, from Mallow in Co. Cork, who has Cerebral Palsy, was awarded the settlement after his family sued the HSE.

It's in addition to two previous awards totaling €2.6 million over the past 4 years.

Mr Justice Kevin Cross said it was a "good and reasonable" settlement, as the compensation was less than half a million euro, with the remainder going on providing care and therapy.

Solicitor Aoife O'Kane spoke on behalf of the family outside court:

"This final set marks the end of a 13 yea ordeal for us. We would hand this €15 million and previous settlements back in a heartbeat if it was possible for Arron to get back what was taken from him in the moments before his birth.

"This is not some kind of lottery win for Arron and all this money will be badly needed so Arron can lead as normal a life as possible".
