The average Irish household will increase their monthly budget by nearly €980 this Christmas.

That’s the latest from Retail Ireland, who say holiday spending is set to match last year’s figures, despite an increase in the cost of living.

The Central Statistics Office report almost a 9% rise in the volume of sales in bars and pubs across the country.

Arnold Dillon, Director of Retail Ireland, says people are ready to celebrate Christmas properly after two years of restrictions:

"After two Christmases when Covid cast a cloud over the celebrations there really is a sense of Irish consumers wanting to mark the celebrations this year.

"We're looking at a spend which is broadly in line with last year."
