Bangers and mash, chicken curry and coddle are some of the most frequent meals eaten in Irish prisons.

The Irish Daily Mirror reports more than 10 million euro was spent on food for Irish inmates in 2022.

That equates to almost 200,ooo euro a week, with an average of nearly 4,200 people in custody from figures released in September last year.

Desserts are usually served after a main meal, including fruit yoghurt or fresh fruit, with prisoners also given a tea-time snack.

A burger, meat pie or hoisin chicken thighs make up some of the most popular tea-time meals.

Breakfast usually consists of a selection of cereals, toast and preserves.
