Irish Student Stranded In Ukraine Starts Journey To Poland

Fresh efforts are underway to evacuate an Irish medical student in Ukraine.

A rescue attempt to help 19-year-old Rachael Diyaolu flee from Sumy yesterday failed after volunteers were fired on by Russian forces.

Rachel says her living conditions in the city were tough, with no electricity or water at the hostel where she was staying.

The Carlow student says she was heartbroken when yesterday's rescue attempt had to be abandoned.

Thankfully Rachael's now on the move and hoping to get across the Polish border today.

Her rescuers uploaded this TikTok of their evacuation this morning:

Russian forces have agreed to cease attack's to allow civilians escape the country via humanitarian corridors.

It's the third attempt to establish safe passages in recent days.
