Junior Sports Minister Expects Full Crowds In Croke Park This Month

The Minister of State for Sport says he expects full capacity crowds at the GAA national league and Ireland's Six Nations opening fixtures.

Jack Chambers says he is optimistic that Covid restrictions will be lifted in time to allow spectators are full capacity for the games in Croke Park in 10 days time and at the Aviva on February 5th.

NPHET meets on Thursday against a backdrop of falling Covid case numbers and calls for a fast reopening of society.

Minister Chambers says he expects a decision within days but there's optimism within Government in regards to restrictions.

Businesses Call For A Clear Timeline On Reopening

Last night, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar told a meeting of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party the waning severity of the Omicron variant combined with high levels of immunity in the population mean restrictions should be eased quickly over the coming weeks.

The move's been welcomed by many business owners.

But Chief Executive of ISME Neil McDonnell says his members need more notice for reopening.

"Real businesses need to plan to purchase and they need to schedule man power."

Mr McDonnell says businesses must know what's coming down the line.
