The Taoiseach says he will lead Fianna Fáil into the next General Election.

Micheál Martin also says he plans to take on the role of Tánaiste when his current term as leader expires in December 2022.

It is part of the coalition government agreement with Fine Gael and the Green Party, in which he will rotate with Leo Varadkar.

Mr Martin says he intends to honour that commitment and insists he has no plans to retire after his time spent in the top job.

"This is a three-party coalition government, we have to demonstrate something that is the norm in Europe in quite a number of member states, that we've got to make governments of this type work," he said.

"And it is working, and the relationship between the three leaders is a good one.

"We meet very regularly and we engage and we sort out issues, that's important too."

Mr Martin also ruled out the chance of a reshuffle of his party's government ministers in the year ahead.

He added: "Well I think as far as I'm concerned now, I'm focusing on being Taoiseach and I will continue on as leader of Fianna Fáil in that regard as well."

The next General Election in Ireland is officially scheduled for 2025.
