The Cabinet has approved new laws to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to under 18s.

The proposals come amid concern from the Department of Health about big tobacco companies using vaping products as a gateway to smoking - concerns shared by Tánaiste Micheál Martin

"In many ways, I see vaping as the revenge of the tobacco industry in terms of getting people hooked on nicotine again, and so therefore, this legislation is important."

The new laws will ban the sale of vapes to children, restrict the type of retailers which can sell them, and severly restrict advertising of e-cigarettes in certain areas like near schools

There's broad support across the Oireachtas including from Sinn Féin's Health Spokesman David Cullinane

"When it comes to those under 18, I do support those measures which are being put in place.

"And, and I always say when there are strong public health measures that need to be put in place with a strong public health rationale, I think it's incumbent on all of us to support those measures."

It's expected the new laws banning the sale of vapes to minors will come into effect this summer.
