Charities have warned that the viral 'Momo Challenge' is nothing but panic spread by adults.

Warnings about the online challenge suggest that children are being encouraged to self harm or worse after receiving messages on WhatsApp.

The game itself centres around the disturbing image of a woman with warped features and bulging, black-ringed eyes.

Mobile numbers have appeared online asking internet users to add them on WhatsApp to play the game.

There have also been claims that the material has appeared in YouTube content aimed at children.

However charities including the Samaritans have dismissed claims that the Momo challenge has caused anyone to self harm but that vulnerable people could be at risk if the subject of self harm is in the headlines.
