The number of patients with Covid-19 in public hospitals has continued to fall and has reached its lowest point in 111 days.

The latest data from the National Public Health Emergency team shows 400 more people have contracted the virus - seven more patients have died.

The five-day average for new infections in the Republic is down 23 percent since last week.

Meanwhile, Tullamore in county Offaly continues to have the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in the country.

However, the rate there has fallen in the past week by almost a fifth.

The incidence rate for the area in Offaly is 672, which is more than four times the national average as of Monday.

Other local electoral areas with high rates are Balbriggan in Dublin which stands at 451 cases per 100,000 people, and Dublin north-inner city where pop-up walk-in testing centres have been set up in the past two weeks.

Letterkenny and Milford in Donegal also have rates of more than 400 cases per 100,000.

There are 20 local electoral areas nationally which have rates of less than five - including four areas in Kerry, and three in each Cork and Waterford.
