Restaurants will be forced to display calories on menus under new proposals.

The legislation would make it compulsory for restaurants to display the calorie count beside the price - or use a traffic light system where red would be high calorie and green low calorie.

According to the Irish Daily Mail, Health Minister Simon Harris said that he plans to publish the legislation by the end of 2019 as par of the government's obesity action plan.

But the move is expected to face backlash, previously the Irish Restaurant Association said that it would fight such legislation, saying that it wouldn't make any difference.

The government's 'A Healthy Weight For Ireland: Obesity Policy and Action Plan was published in 2016 and included 60 actions including calorie displays.
