There's been a surge in the number of tenants being given notice to vacate their rental properties.

The Residential Tenancies Board reports a 58 percent increase in the number of eviction notices issued in the first half of 2022, compared with the final 6 months of 2021.

Almost 3,000 notices to quit were issued between January and the end of June, with the RTB saying the main reason is landlords choosing to leave the private rental market to sell their properties.

The figures were obtained by Sinn Fein, which is now calling on the Housing Minister to convene an emergency meeting of stakeholders and opposition parties this month.

The party wants an eviction ban to be reintroduced, similar to what was in force during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.
