The World Health Organisation says the sweetener used in certain food and drinks could possibly cause cancer.

Researchers have linked a high intake of aspartame to developing liver disease.

Aspartame is also in thousands of other food products including chewing gum, ice cream and yoghurt.

People would have to drink more than 9 to 14 cans of diet fizzy drinks to breach the daily limit.

Dr Francesco Branca is the director of the Department of Nutrition and food safety at the WHO:

"Children may be more of a concern but occasional consumers should not be concerned about consuming some products whether it's drinks or chewing gums or other products".
