The Taoiseach is calling for society to pause and reflect on driving habits, in the wake of Garda Kevin Flatley's death.

The Garda Representative Association says Garda Flatley's colleagues are "numb" after the 49-year-old died after being struck by a motorbike at a speed checkpoint in north Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

The motorcyclist, who's aged in his 30s, remains in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital.

The GRA says Garda Kevin Flatley's death should serve as a "stark reminder" of the dangers of the job.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the nation is numb since the tragedy.

"That unique connection between An Garda Síochána and the wider community, that leads to really a very strong sense of solidarity and empathy with the family of Kevin Flatley and with, and with the entire force of An Garda Síochána.

"We have lost the person who by the accounts of all these colleagues, gave so much to the force and then gave so much to communities."

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris says Garda Flatley's death is devastating.

"He'd been engaged in roads policing since 2018 and was a very professional and proficient officer.

"He was involved in the detection of speeding on a road known as the R132, the old N1, as you travel north towards Ballbriggan, and really regrettably, a collision takes place, he's struck by a motorbike and subsequently dies from his injuries.

"This is a terrible loss for us all."

Paul Cleary, Assistant Commissioner with the Dublin Metropolitan Region, says Garda Kevin Flatley was a valued member of his community in Ballbriggan, where he lived.

"Kevin had 26 years service in An Garda Síochána and was well regarded by his colleagues.

"He was very much involved in his own community where he lived in Ballbriggan, and the local GAA club.

"He was a very well liked person, very well respected, and is a huge loss to our Garda family."

Fingal County Council is to open books of condolences at County Hall in Swords and Civic Offices in Blanchardstown.

Garda Kevin Flatley's local GAA Club has paid tribute to him, describing him as a passionate member.

Dave Rooney is the Chairperson of O'Dwyer's GAA Club in Balbriggan.

"He was always positive, always had a smile on his face.

He had a great way with the kids, always patient and always encouraging.

"You could feel the love of sport from him, in particular he had a real passion for hurling and camogie".
