One of the world's strongest earthquakes ever has led to tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean.

The 8.8-magnitude quake triggered waves of up to four-metres high. It struck the Kamchatka Peninsula off the coast of Far East Russia.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for several areas including Alaska, Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii and parts of the US west coast.

Mayor of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi, has warned residents to evacuate to higher ground.

"We're here to help you, but we need you to help yourself as well.

"Don't go down to the beach, don't be looking at waves.

"Get yourself as high as you possibly can".

Dave Snider, from America's National Tsunami Warning Center, said extremely dangerous waves are expected.

"The most important thing to understand about tsunamis, this is not a surf wave, it's not a wind wave.

"A tsunami is the entire ocean column being lifted up above high tide level, because of the extreme movement of the Earth's crust from an earthquake.

"So this is a a significant planetary event".

There were warnings of hazardous tsunami waves just over a week ago, following a serious of powerful tremors in the same region.

US Geological Survey registered quakes of 6.7 and 7.4 in magnitude on the 20 of July.
