The live goat kept in a cage in a tower at the Puck Fair in Kerry has been released.

Organisers of the festival in Killorglin say King Puck was removed from the top of the stand this morning.

They continue to say he was placed in the shade with a constant supply of cold water and food and is receiving hourly vet check-ups.

It follows criticism of the tradition at the Kerry event, due to the current hot spell, and animal welfare concerns.

Organisers say the goat has a good bill of health.

In a statement, organisers said "Under the 5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare, Puck Fair continues to ensure that the welfare of King Puck is their highest priority.

"Due to unprecedented spells of hot, sunny weather, King Puck was removed from the top of the stand this morning (Thursday 11th August), placed in the shade with a constant supply of cold water and food, and is receiving hourly vet check-ups that continue to show that the goat has a good bill of health."
